The Quandamooka People

stradbroke island quandamooka pippy

This land of ours is incredibly special and we would like to acknowledge the Nunukul, Gorenpul and Nughi traditional owners of the Moreton Bay Islands Quandamooka Country, the land in which we work, live and play. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. The Quandamooka people include three clans; the Nughi people of Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) and the Nunukul and Gorenpul people of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island).

In 2011 the High Court of Australia recognized that the Quandamooka people remained in continuous occupation of both Mulgumpin and Minierribah, despite the hardship of European invasion. Carbon dating of known Moreton Bay islands campsites, proves original occupation dating back some 22,000 years, however it is now widely accepted that original occupation dates back time immemorial.

Testament to their tenacity, not only did the Quandamooka people survive European Invasion, their ancestors witnessed the last ice age (around 12,000 years ago), when Moreton Bay was a grass paddock and the waters of the Pacific Ocean started flooding back in, after receding to the continental shelf some 20 kilometres east of our current shore line. We think that’s pretty amazing.
